Fort Plain, NY | Oct 19, 1780 Sir John Johnson's force crossed the Mohawk River with the intention of burning the town of Stone Arabia as part of his campaign to destroy the homes of American rebels. Capt. Joseph Brant and his men were in advance of the main body when they came under attack from Col. John Brown's advance guard.

The Battle of Stone Arabia was brief. After Brown's vanguard collided with a detachment of Brant's Volunteers, Brown ordered his men into a less than ideal defensive position in the woods behind a stone fence. They were subsequently attacked from the left by Brant's Volunteers and from the right by Butler's Rangers.

Stone Arabia, NY -- A Site on a Revolutionary War Road Trip STONE ARABIA NEW YORK Today, downtown Stone Arabia is two churches — a Lutheran Church and Dutch Reformed Church. The congregations of these two churches are among the oldest in the Mohawk Valley.

It was an encounter between Albany County, New York militia and a British-supported expedition of Indians and Loyalists led by Lieutenant Colonel Sir John Johnson and Captain Joseph Brant.

On October 19, 1780, Loyalists, Native Allies and British soldiers led by Lieutenant Colonel Sir John Johnson and Captain Joseph Brant began destroying farms in Stone Arabia, a village about a mile north of Fort Keyser, in what was then Tryon County (today, Palatine Township in Montgomery County). For a few years just before the Revolution, Stone Arabia was given as a name to that section later to be called the Palatine District extending from the Nose to the Falls and northward to Canada, but on March 8, 1773, it lost this wider application and from that time was confined to the patent.

Stone Arabia is a small hamlet in the Town of Palatine, at the intersection of NY-10 and County Rd. 34 in Montgomery County. If you were in downtown Albany, you could drive northwest to Stone Arabia in about an hour. This hamlet doesn't really county as technically being a "town" because of its extremely small population.
